The objective in this paper has concerned the investigation of the dynamical stability of a moored semisubmersible system establishing the routes to chaos under small amplitudes of the incident wave. Therein an experimental setup of a real case study was defined. This has consisted in writing down spans for real environmental parameters of the wave (period and amplitude) and of the mooring system (nonlinear restoring coefficients) in order to assume them as realistic bifurcation parameters. For small wave amplitudes the nonlinear hydrodynamic effects disappear and the Airy theory can be applied. Thus one concludes that the observed nonlinear phenomena in the behaviour are absolutely caused by nonlinearities of mooring lines. Poincarre map was used to qualitatively determine the nature of dynamical changes. Our results show that small cubic coefficients of the mooring lines combined with large wave amplitudes (within the Airy theory) are responsible for quasiperiodic motions, chaos and for the coexistence of strange attractors.
