Identification of ancient mangroves can
help reconstruct the history of tropical coastal regions, especially concerning
the impacts of erosion or sedimentation on coastal dynamics and related human
activities. The way in which mangroves react to perturbations at a local or
global scale is relevant for understanding coastline evolution. Extensive shore
erosion along the Brazilian coast has been reported. Since the evidence is
still not sufficient to relate these phenomena to the relative sea-level
changes observed in Brazil
in the last 50 years, it has been recommended to intensively monitor some
vulnerable sectors, such as Salinópolis (Pará). They also indicated that the
high tidal amplitude and the low gradient of the rivers in North
Brazil makes them particularly sensitive to sea-level rise. The
present work analyses a time-series of satellite images, identifies areas with
loss and gain of vegetation coverage and documents a case of mangrove
degradation due to sand deposition near this area (Bragança, Pará).
Identification and comparison of patterns of root remains are presented to
provide hints for tracing this extremely dynamic process in this mangal and
others in the north of Brazil
affected by similar processes.
