This paper intends to analyze certain characteristics of social protest
in Argentina in the nineties. More specifically, it deals with some focal
points of interpretation which allow to consider the changes that took place as
social mobilization in the country.
During the eighties the
transition process towards democracy showed a series of conflict focal points that were explored by researchers in terms of the emergence of new
social movements; such as, for example, the movement for human rights. These
focal points became the hypotheses for research work which enabled the
organization of reflections on the social mobilization beyond the traditional
studies focused on the notion of class. The nineties, however, show a progressive
process of fragmentation of the protest that makes it very difficult to rebuild
units or continuities of identity matrixes. This new stage may be grasped
bearing in mind some general phenomena as, for example, the emergence of new
subjects, new demands and new forms of protest. It becomes necessary, however,
to discuss some lines that enable us to understand this fragmentation process
in more specific terms. In this paper we shall consider the transformations
that are typical of the protests for human rights in Argentina in two clearly
defined aspects: on one hand, taking into account that this kind of protests,
highly characteristic of the democratic transition stage, have contributed to
define the core elements of the protest repertoire in the nineties; and on the
other, setting some focal points of particularization and specification of this
kind of protests that gave birth to new meanings of the idea of human rights
and to the emergence of new conflict fields.
