There are several parameters obtained from the data taken by the surfacedetectors that are sensitive to the identity of the primary. The Sb parameter is one of those. It is known that S b is a very good parameter for proton-iron and photon-hadron discrimination. In this work we present an improved version of the semi-analytical model developed to understand the physical properties of Sb . We use this new version of the model to understand the formation of a maximum on the curve corresponding to the merit factor as a function of the exponent b, for the proton-photondiscrimination case.
