We study the fluctuations of the pulse shape of showers detected by the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. We develop a simple model of the fluctuations to understand the experimental data. By using this simple model we obtain evidence that the muons arrive earlier than the electromagnetic particles as it was found in past experiments. We also find that the muon signal increases with the distance to the shower axis. We define a parameter R, which can be used as a pointer of the muon content of the signal which is very important in composition analysis.We also compare some characteristics of the time structure of the shower obtained from real data and from Monte Carlo simulation of the cascades. In this very simple analysis we find consistent results between theexperimental data and simulations.
