Resumen:
Currently, long-term care services are socially accepted alternatives to meet the assistance and accommodation needs of older people in situations of dependency.Their design and expansion involve a complex network of diverse factors called "global aging". This is the result of the increased longevity, demographic changes, the improvement of old people?s lifestyle, as they have become more autonomous, but also fragile and have develop heterogeneous chronic diseases. Other key factors are the economic development and the productive demands of the market, the changes in the composition and functions in the families and the role of the State as guarantor of human rights. This work contrasts the characteristics of these services in Argentina with the new standards established in the Inter-American Convention on Protecting the Human Rights of Older Persons (OAS) and proposes bases for a new national legislation.
