Resumen:
An experiment was carried out to test the thesis of thesensory-motor basis of metaphorical abstract concepts.Congenitally blind and sighted participants had to paraphrasemetaphorical expressions derived from the UNDERSTANDINGis GRASPING and UNDERSTANDING is SEEINGconceptual metaphors, and to evaluate to what extent they feltthey had understood them. On the one hand, congenitallyblind participants did not comprehend betterUNDERSTANDING is GRASPING expressions thanUNDERSTANDING is SEEING expressions. On the otherhand, sighted participants did not comprehendUNDERSTANDING is SEEING expressions better than theblind. The implications of the results for the embodiedConceptual Metaphor Theory of Lakoff and Johnson arediscussed.
