State estimation has become an important area of research in the field of process engineering. This is because there are many applications that demand the knowledge of various of the state variables, if not all of them. The aim of this work is to tackle the problem of state estimation in batch chemical processes. For this purpose, we show the convenience of using a set of simple linear observers whose design is based on a PWL description of the process dynamics. The estimation strategy herein proposed can be used for a nonlinear system appropriately approximated by a PWL model. Useful bounds are also calculated to quantify the estimation error. Finally, a worked example is developed for showing the performance of the observer.
