Resumen:
This paper considers the design, analysis and implementation withihn a commertial distributed control system of a model-based control strategy for an industrial C3-splitter column.  Due to product specificacions and integration with other parts of the porduction complex, this column must to kept under tigth control despite the efects of large, slow disturbance and systems response. The benefits derived from advances control are derived from increasing the amount of on-specification propylene produced, and reducing the propylene content of the bottons recycle stream which increases the run length of the downstream cracking furnace.  ICI staff have estimate that the extra propylene and improved run length are worth at least A$500,000 p.a. and $100,000 p.a. respectively.
