E-mail: casanave@criba.edu.ar In this work we studied the mechanism of the haemostasis in the armadillo C. villosus, totally unknown until now. Reference values were established for the platelet count, and the mean platelet volume. The ultrastructural study of platelets showed the presence of typical mammalian characteristics and the formation of pseudopodia during activation. We established the plasmatic functional fibrinogen concentration and identifid the basic mammalian coagulation system, with two activation pathways (contact and tisular factor coagulation systems) and a common pathway. We also identified the presence of the principal coagulation factors and of the natural anticoagulation systems (antithrombin III, protein C and protein S). Our findings support our hypothesis about that this species could be used as an animal model in the study of haemostasis and related subjects.
