Resumen:
The hydrogeological basin of Bahía Blanca is locatedin the southern part of Buenos Aires province, being themost important one. The deep artesian aquifer, underlying 500 metersor more into the basin, is of .great interest due to its thermalproperties and to the high production fresh water wells. However there are manyunknown features about the location and extension of the recharge area, the thermal anomaly and the origin of water. Thisreport presents the 18O16O ratios in samples of surfaceand groundwater in the area of Sierra de Curamalal and Sierra de La Ventana and groundwater from the deep artesian aquifer of Bahía Blanca basin. It was found that the rainwaterinfiltrating the piedmont hills is quite similar to that of the deep aquifer groundwater. However the latter is slightly moredepleted than the former, suggesting than the climatic conditions prevailing atthe recharge time, perhaps late Pleistocene or Holocene age, were colder thanthe present ones. A more extensive research is proposed in order to establishthe groundwater source, flow conditions and climate during the recharge of thedeep aquifer. The research plan includes stable isotopes (2H, 18O,13C) and 14C measurements as well as water hydrochemicalevolution analyses.
