Resumen:
A new mammalian assemblage from the Late Miocene Palo Pintado Formation in Northwestern Argentina isdescribed. Specimens were exhumed from the lower levels of the unit cropping out at Tonco Valley, SaltaProvince. The association includes representatives of seven families and three orders: Cingulata (Macrochorobates,Vetelia, Euphractini gen et sp. indet. a and b), Notoungulata (Paedotherium, Protypotherium, Typotheriopsis),and Rodentia (Caviidae gen et sp. indet. a and b, Procardiomys, Protabrocoma, Prolagostomus,Lagostomus). This assemblage, together with stratigraphical information, suggests a Late Miocene age, probablyintermediate between Chasicoan and Huayquerian SALMAs for the fossiliferous levels of the Palo PintadoFormation in Tonco Valley. Paleoecological data discernible from the faunal association suggest grasslandand marsh communities that developed in the flood-plain setting under a seasonal climate with a conspicuousdry season.
