Resumen:
The Río de la Plata estuary, located in the eastern coastof South America, has large social, ecological andeconomical importance for Argentina and Uruguay, inwhich margins their capital cities (Buenos Aires andMontevideo) and a number of harbours, resorts andindustrial centres are located. Being the estuary the mainsource of drinking water for the millions of inhabitants inthe region and a recreational area, the increasingoccurrence of cyanobacteria blooms, consistently composedof Microcystis and Dolichospermum complex, is worryingand the need for a monitoring tool like remote sensing ishighly desirable. In the present study we evaluated existingmulti- and hyper-spectral red/NIR chlorophyll-a (chl-a)algorithms using radiometric and bio-optical fieldmeasurements. Empirically derived multi-spectralalgorithms showed poor results, while hyper-spectralalgorithms showed better and promising results. S3B/OLCIand CHRIS-PROBA chl-a maps were generated using fittedmodels derived using the existing in situ dataset.
