This work focuses on the effect that the new two step austempering process developed by Putatunda, has on the mechanical properties, with particular interestest in the rolling contact fatigue resistance of ductile iron. The ductile iron for this study was obtained in an industrial facility, in the shape of ½” plates. The samples for the microstructural characterization and wear test were prepared by machining. The results show that the two step austempering promotes a higher degree of the ausferritic transformation, which results in a slightly higher hardness, but in an much higher rolling contact fatigue resistance for those variants austempered a low temperature.
