TheNationalInformationSocietyPolicyTemplatewhichIFAPlaunchedin2009wasanimportantcontributiontopolicy-makingeffortsattheinternational,regionalandnationallevel.Inparticular,thistoolhasbeeninstrumentalinsupportingthedevelopmentofnationalcapacitiestodesignandmanagepolicyprocessesinanumberofEastAfricanandSouthAsiancountries.ThistrainingwasdeliveredthroughaseriesofExecutiveTrainingsinGovernmentInformationLeadershipconductedinpartnershipwiththeUnitedNationsUniversity?sSpecialOperatingUnitforPolicy-DrivenElectronicGovernance(UNU-EGOV).Thesecapacity-buildingexercisesconductedthroughweek-longregionaltrainingshavealsoservedtobuildnetworksforcooperationandexperiencesharingbetweenparticipatingcountriesandwithIFAP?sandUNU-EGOV?snetworks.The2030SustainableDevelopmentAgenda,withitsattentiontothe5Ps-People,Planet,Prosperity,PeaceandPartnership?offersnewpossibilitiesformoreholisticandcontextualizedapproachestodevelopment.Thenewapproachesaswellasthedemandsofaframeworkwith17goalsand169targetshasalsohighlightedanurgentneedfortoolstosupportpolicy-makersinmoreeffectivelyaligningtheiractionsandeffortstothisnewglobalfocus of action. Torespondtothispressingneed,IFAPandUNU-EGOVhaveagainjoinedforcesandleveragedtheirnetworkstodeveloptheKnowledgeSocietiesPolicyHandbook.TheHandbookbuildsonexistingknowledgeandpracticestoprovidepolicy-makerswithanactionableconceptualframeworkforunderstandingandassessingtherelationshipsbetweentheSDGsandKnowledgeSocieties.Byidentifyinggapsaswellasstrengths,theHandbookwillenablecountriestomoreeffectivelydeployresourcesandimplementappropriatepolicymeasures.Inlinewiththeperspectivethatpolicy-craftingisacontinuous,evolvinganddynamicprocess,theHandbookissupportedbyanexpandableonlinecaselibraryaswellasanonlineglobalcommunityofresearchersandpractitioners.Throughtheironlineinteractions-sharingofexperiencesandresearch,collaborativeproblemsolvingandco-creation,mappingofemergingtrendsamongstothers?thiscommunityofpracticewillprovideenhancementstothemethodologies,toolsandresourcesthatsupporttheHandbook.
