Citología de mucosa bucal en diabéticos tipo II. Estudio morfológico y morfométrico con microscopía laser confocal

In this work we analyzed some cytological extensions of the buccal mucosa epithelium corresponding to type II diabetes patients using light and confocal laser microsocopy (CLSM). In all cases, exfoliative cytologies were taken from the cheek oral mucosa and tongue lateral side of 14 diabetic patients and 6 control patients without these antecedents. The obtained samples -cytobrush- were stained using Papanicolau technique. For the morphological analysis, the eosinophilic index (EI) was determined and CLSM images were taken for morphometry. Variables analyzed here were: cytoplasmic area (AC) and nuclear area (AN), and the ratio nucleus-cytoplasm (N/C) was calculated. In diabetic patients, EI varied according to the analyzed area, with a significant cytoplasmatic amphophilia. AN parameters were significantly higher in diabetic patients than in controls, especially for lingual specimens. For the lingual region, N/C index was notably lower in diabetic patients as compared to controls. Cytological analysis and morphologic and morphometric alterations identified in this work reveal some crucial findings for the differential diagnosis of syalosis of alcoholic and diabetic origin.
