Frequency distribution of the major oxides in 57 granitoid and 31 of metamorphite samples from the Cafayate region (Pampean Ranges, Argentina) were tested against both normal and lognormal distribution models. Based on test of significance (skewness, Kurtosis and Chi Square Pearson criterion) and frequency diagrams, distribution function of both types of rocks were compared: Si02 and H20+ show similars distribution whereas Al203, Fe203, MnO, K20 and P205 follow different patterns. For Ti02, FeO, MgO and Na20 no definition exists. The analysis of the factors upon which distribution types depends, suggest that physic and physicochemical conditions of rocks formation were the main factor controlling the observed distribution.
