Resumen:
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) has been cultivated both as an oilseed crop and as ornamental. Several protocols have been described for the micropropagation being direct regeneration by organogenesis the generally accepted mechanism for regeneration of this species. Despite a strong genotype dependancy, other factors, such as: type and ontogenic stage of explants, environmental conditions of the culture and media composition, affect sunflower organogenesis. Several problems have hindered the ability to regenerate normal shoots; being the most common hyperhydricity and precocious flowering. A suitable protocol for direct shoot regeneration from cotyledons has been developed and established in our laboratory and will be described in this chapter. Improvement in the quality of regenerated shoots will also be addressed.
