Resumen:
Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) regulate the morphogenesis of tissues and organs during the embryonic development. However, the presence of these factors in the oviduct, where preimplantation events take place, is unknown. In this study we demonstrate the expression of BMPs and some of their signal transduction components in the bovine oviduct. RT-PCR was used for verifying the expression of BMP2,3,4,5,6,7,10,12,13,15; the receptors ALK2, ACTRIIA and SMAD1, one of their signaling pathway molecule, in oviductal samples of adult cows during the preovulatory stage. Total RNA was extracted from: complete oviducts, portions of ampulla and isthmus, oviductal epithelial cells (OEC) freshly obtained from both regions and OEC cultured in vitro. Our results showed the expression of BMP2,3,4,5,7,15, ALK2, ACTRIIA and SMAD1 in the complete oviduct. This expression pattern was conserved in ampulla and isthmus, with the exception of BMP5 that was absent in the ampulla region. Moreover, all these factors were highly expressed in freshly obtained OEC from both anatomical regions. In adittion, under in vitro culture conditions, OEC conserved a similar expression profile. Considering that BMP system is present in the oviduct epithelium we suggest that BMPs could be active as autocrine/paracrine regulators of the early development events in the oviductal environment.
