Resumen:
Abstract This work reports the results associated with dioecy characteristic of Autrocedrus chilensis in Argentina and Chile. This review includes theoretical considerations to explain somatic and demographic consequences by differential reproductive costs between sexes and to define future studies. Females trees of A. chilensis invest several times more resources into reproduction than male trees. However they show no significant difference in size or age of male and female trees at the time of their first reproduction, nor a marked trend in sex ratio at different sites, radial growth or mean sensitivity between sexes. Finally, the mechanisms that enable the compensation of the reproductive costs including photosynthesis in developing green female cones, which could partially offset reproductive cost, nutrient resorption from senescing reproductive structures, differential patterns of distribution according to sex and physiological differences between sexes.
