Resumen:
Wetlands are fragile and dynamic areas exposed to both human and natural influence. Samborombón Bay wetland is located on the eastern edge of El Salado lowland (Buenos Aires province). The central and northern area of the wetland is a particular hydrogeological environment where the only freshwater source is located on the shell ridges. Shell ridges have been exploited since the early twentieth century causing the exhaustion of important freshwater reserves. The aim of this work is toevaluate the reduction of fresh groundwater volume as a result of mining activity, in order to know the limits and potential of freshwater reserves in the area. To achieve this goal an estimation of the volume of shells ridges extracted due to mining activity has been carried out. Results show that fresh water reserves depletion by the extraction of shells affects hydric sustainability of the area.
