Resumen:
Anaerobic treatment of sewage is preferably applied at ambient temperatures above 20°C mainly due to the biochemistry of anaerobic processes and the low concentration of sewage (see Chapter 3 for an in-depth evaluation of the processes involved). As a result, tropical and sub-tropical countries are most suitable for its application. In the majority of the industrialised world, sewage treatment is already implemented and the systems of choice have been defined. Many industrialised countries have a climate that is too cold to allow for efficient anaerobic sewage treatment without having to spend energy on heating. Some low-temperature anaerobic systems have been researched but are not yet implemented in practice.
