Resumen:
Outbreaks of harmful algal blooms (HAB) have occurred in SW Atlantic Ocean coastal waters causing Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP), Diarrheic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP) and Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP). Both DSP and PSP events have been related with human health problems generating fishery closures and commercial losses. To address this issue, a collaboration between Argentinean, Brazilian and Uruguayan researchers was established to produce –based on the available data, literature and our own studies-, a guide for the identification of potentially harmful marine microalgae from this region. The guide will be mainly targeted on people who do not include taxonomy as routine in their work but develop research in HAB. The publication will be in Portuguese and Spanish and will include among others, chapters on methodology, different groups of microalgae, oceanographic characteristics and algal toxins. Preliminary data on toxic dinoflagellates and diatoms will be presented during the meeting.
