Unexpected rearrangement of gem-bisphosphonates as Michael-type acceptors

Bisphosphonic acid derivatives exhibit valuable pharmacological actions. These compounds have been used in bone disorders and, recently, they proved to be potent growth inhibitors of several pathogenic trypanosomatids. Bearing in mind the relevance of these drugs, it was decided to study the chemical behavior of tetraethyl ethylidene bisphosphonate and its epoxy derivative tetraethyl 1,2-epoxyethyl-bisphosphonate as Michael-type acceptors.
