Resumen:
Fortunately, outbreaks of gastroenteritis caused by foodborne virus are increasingly taken into account. This information update, which provides an advantage for the implementation of actions towards prevention and control, has been achieved through better knowledge of the most common causative agents and the food involved in transmission, situation that comes hand in hand with improved recovery techniques and detection of viruses. In order to have a snapshot of the current global viruses that produce foodborne acute gastroenteritis, we conducted a literature review, using SienceDirect, of human outbreaks reported in the past five years, considering its location and food source involved. We found that only eight Norovirus, two Rotavirus, and one Astrovirus world outbreaks were reported, but none was found from enteric Adenovirus in that period. While food has been associated in 62% of cases of Norovirus outbreaks, the vehicle of infection for the other etiologic agents was not identified. All of the reported outbreaks took place in densely populated institutions such as the army, hospitals, nursing homes and schools. While outbreaks can also occur outside these areas, they are rarely investigated and documented, for which foodborne gastrointestinal outbreaks are in general still underestimated.
