Resumen:
Although the kinematics by which the southernmost Andes became a curved orogen has been the subject of debate for more than five decades, it is still uncertain if they comprise either a primary bend, a non-rotational arc that contains offset domains bounded by parallel, left lateral strike-slip faults, or is the product of true oroclinal bending. There is not enough paleomagnetic data in the southernmost Andes to state without any doubts that they are the result of orocline bending. It is proposed an alternative “primary bend model” that explains the features found in the mountain chain in the regional context of plate tectonic interactions through time:
