Resumen:
Among hydrogen storage technologies, the use of hydride-forming metal alloys is one of the most promising methods. In these systems, hydrogen can be stored at high volumetric energy density, which is comparable to that of liquid hydrogen and allows its application to advanced electricity storage systems, such as the nickel-metal hydride (Ni/MH) batteries used in electric vehicles. These rechargeable batteries have replaced nickel-cadmium batteries due to the benefits derived from their basic technology. A revision of worldwide scientific advances in this area from 1990 to present is made. Changes in the design of different alloys used as electrodes in an alkaline environment are presented. This analysis covers both the study of their physicochemical properties and their application to electric cars that have been recently introduced into the market, such as the hybrid cars. This presentation not only the benefits but also the shortcomings of these hydride-forming alloys for their use as battery electrodes. Present trends in this field of research are also included.
