Resumen:
Recent advances in the development of selective electrode catalysts for energy conversion systems are presented. The design and preparation of high surface area carbon-supported facetted Pt catalysts for PEM fuel cells are described. The surface structure and morphology of the Pt catalysts were studied by using XRD, SEM and STM techniques. The characterisation studies of the dispersed catalysts revealed the presence of highly facetted Pt crystallites having a predominant (111) preferential crystal orientation. The catalytic activity of (111)-type facetted Pt crystallites for the oxygen electroreduction reaction in acid media is significantly higher than those for different types of highly dispersed Pt catalysts. An improvement of the hydrogen/oxygen PEM fuel cell performance in the activation controlled region was also observed with highly facetted Pt catalysts.
