The Effect of Electron Irradiation on the ß / 18R Martensitic Transformation in CuZnAl Alloys.

The effect of 2.65 MeV electron irradiation on the beta ~ 18R martensitic transfonnation in CuZnAl alloys was studied. Room temperature and 120K irradiation in the beta phase produced no change in the transformation temperature.Irradiation in the 18R phase above room temperature produced a shift of the transformation temperature to the beta phase toward higher values. This shift was found to increase with higher irradiation temperature, or higher dose, without reaching a saturation value.Irradiation at about 95K in the 18R phase produced a shift in the transfonnation temperature only if the sample was heated to above room/temperature before transforming to the beta phase. Analysis of the results showed that the transformation temperature shifts were due to the stabilization of the 18R phase by radiation enhanced diffusion. The kinetics of stabilization by irradiation could be followed with a simple defect reaction model based on kinetic equations.
