Resumen:
Propolis has been used worldwide for years in folk medicine and can be regarded as a potential natural source of bioactive for the pharmaceutical and food industry. Argentina has a diverse climate that is expressed in multiple regions phytogeographic, hence, propolis from the Northwest, Northeast, Center and South of Argentina would have different chemical composition and consequently, different biological properties. Various studies have shown that the propolis from Argentinean Northwest contain a high level of polyphenolic compounds, principally, flavonoids and phenolic acid, and showed biological properties such as anti-inflammatory, scavenging free radical, antimicrobial (against human and veterinary pathogens), antihelmintic and antimutagenic. The chemical components responsible for some biological properties of Argentinean Northwest propolis are flavonoids principally chalcones and flavones with different grade of hydroxylation and methoxylation. The findings on bioactivities and chemical composition of argentinean propolis support their potential use in the developed of promising formulations for use in the human and veterinary medicine.
