Influence of Co-ZSM-5 on the catalytic degradation of low density polyethylene

In view of their versatility and relatively low cost, the consumption of plastic materials has been growing steadily, although the disposal of waste plastics constitutes a severe environmental problem due mainly to their chemical inertness. For this reason, it is necessary to develop environmental methods to handle plastics wastes different to the typical treatment systems: incineration and landfill. Chemical recycling in an important technique to convert these wastes into gas and liquid hydrocarbons [1-3]; moreover, the addition of catalysts improves the thermal process [4] because it permits more valuable products to be obtained than in thermal processes at low temperatures and at lower reaction time. In this work we present activity results using modified Co-ZSM-5 as catalysts, analyzing reaction temperature, reaction time and technique of insert the cobalt species in the microporous matrix for the degradation of LDPE.
