Resumen:
This note attempts to offer new elements to support the reading of saeva, in Valerius Flaccus’ line(I 47) tam saeva gementem, as an adverbial accusative, based on intertextual arguments –given thedemonstrated relationship between Valerius Flaccus and Lucan. After establishing the centralaspects of this link, and considering the inevitable presence of its epic precursor, Aeneid, we willcarefully examine tam saeva gementem in light of two passages of Lucan: VII 169-171 and VIII701-704. As it is widely acknowledged, Virgil was the linguistic model of his epic successors andValerius Flaccus was a great innovator in this regard, with a talent for coining new phrases. In thisrespect, we intend to demonstrate how Valerius Flaccus sees in Lucan’s modern experimentation arole model, to the extent that he not only embraces it but enhances it.
