Resumen:
Photosynthesis is the process by which light energy is converted into chemical potential energy for sustenance in plants and photosynthetic bacteria. Carotenoids play several roles in the photosynthetic process: they are light-harvesting pigments and efficiently transfer the energy to nearby chlorophylls. Also, they protect the photosynthetic apparatus by quenching chlorophyll triplet states. In this work, new dyads consisting of carotenoids covalently linked to macrocyclic systems have been synthesized and studied spectroscopically. They show excellent singlet energy transfer efficiency and high triplet energy transfer rates.
