We have recently developed a powerful technique, single molecule spectroelectrochemistry SMS-EC, to study electron transfer process at highly heterogeneous interfaces. A key application of SMS-EC is to the study of conjugated polymers, a novel class of organic electronic materials used in promising new strategies for solar cells, flat-panel displays and chemical sensors. The power of SMS-EC lies on the ability to measure the electrochemical behavior of single molecules one at a time, offering for the first time the distribution of key electrochemical variables. By combining the power of single molecule and electrochemical methods this new technique will greatly accelerate the development of organic electronic devices.
