Resumen:
The Bible is one of the most cited, alluded to and reworked texts in Borges?s literature. It is the object of essays, stories, poems and of a variety of evocations dealing with several topics. In recent years numerous studies have focused on this intertextual relation. Biblical characters and episodes recreated in Borges?s writings have been tracked, as well as the influence of the Bible in the conception of his work. Even theological interpretations of his fiction have been suggested. However, only few approaches have considered the context in which Borges did his reading of the Bible and its resulting implications. The aim of this chapter is to present a number of contextual elements that are key to understand Borges?s particular interpretation of the Bible, and the consequent specific meanings which are derived from it.(ISBN en prensa.
