Chullpas, mummies,sepulchres, huanca monoliths and some manifestations of rock art, among otherswere constituted as agents carrying themselves the capabilities of the ancestors.Chullpas and similar structures show a remarkable spatial distribution, a chronologyranging from the fourteenth century to colonial times, and an important morphologicaland constructive variability. Hence they provide a significant way to examinethe place of ancestors in Andean prehispanic societies and to analyse their transformationsduring colonial times. This presentation will focus on the spatial distribution,physical ties with other structures, and constructive characteristics of chullparianstructures in the highlands of northern Argentina, examining their place withinthe broader region of the Southern Andes.
