Resumen:
The objective of this study was to determine the impact of protein supplementation on dry matter intake and ruminal hydrogen sulfide concentration ([H2S]) in lambs consuming low-quality tropical grass hay (Panicum maximum cultivar Gatton; 7.0 % CP) and drinking low salt water (LS) or high salt water (HS). Twenty lambs in individual metabolism cages were used in a ten treatments by two period (10 × 2) trial. Treatment structure was 2 × 5 factorial. First factor was water quality (WQ): LS (466 mg/kg of total dissolved solids [TDS]) vs. HS (8927 mg/kg TDS of which 6680 mg/kg as sulfates). Second factor was 5 levels of soybean meal (SBM; 44.4% CP) 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 or 1.00% BW/d. Water quality × SBM interactions were significant for forage (FOMI; P
