Resumen:
Nanostructured materials can providesolutions to several technological problems due to their novelproperties. Often there are limits to they way they can be originallysynthesized and their modification by other means is required. Inother cases, understanding their modification for deployment inextreme environments, like deep space or a nuclear reactor, isneeded. Irradiation or mechanical deformation can be employed totailor-design nanostructured materials, to obtain certain desiredproperties, like enhanced mechanical hardness or specific opticalproperties. Some examples of nanomaterialmodification will be provided for metals, semiconductors andinsulators. In the case of irradiation modifications will be shownfor projectiles from eV to GeV. In the case of mechanicaldeformation, deformation at high strain rates, as in shock waves, will be discussed. Some materials shows significantradiation resistance, and appear as candidates for future reactormaterials. Changes in mechanical properties due to ion irradiationwill also be discussed for nanowires and for graphene.
