Resumen:
Assembly of small particles in patterned arrays can beused to obtain organic and inorganic advanced ma-terials with a wide range of textures and porosities.Waves in a liquid can be used as a template to mobi-lize dispersed particles to target positions in the array. In the experiment shown in the image, the waves aregenerated by vertically vibrating a cylindrical vesselcontaining a 1.88 mm thick layer of a water-glycerolmixture (ρl = 1.03 g/cm3 ). Heavy polystyrene particles(20 μm in radius, ρp = 1.05 g/cm3), initially dispersedin the liquid bulk, interact with the waves while set-tling by gravity to end-up forming the patterned arrayat the bottom of the vessel. Left column (vibrationfrequency= 65 Hz, acceleration=1.03 g): (a) Capillarywaves in the liquid free surface (bright and dark ringsobtained using a beam-splitter), and (b) the associ-ated ring-shaped particle patterns at the bottom ofthe vessel. Right column (vibration frequency= 65 Hz,acceleration=1.2 g): (c) Superposition of capillary andFaraday waves, and (d) the associated star-shaped par-ticle patterns.
