Abrocoma schistacea Thomas, 1921 (Sierra del Tontal chinchilla rat) is a species of chinchilla rat in the family Abrocomidae with body of medium-size. It is a rock-specialist species that inhabits the pre-Andean foothills of southern San Juan Province (Argentina) within an altitudinal range between 2,115-2,884 m. Some of its specializations are padded fee 30 t with leathery tubercles on the pads. It would classify the chinchilla rat as a creosotebush specialist. A. schistacea is distinguished from other chinchilla rats by its diurnal activity and by living in groups of 3-4 individuals. Density of A. schistacea was 0.15 individuals ha-1. This species has been categorized as low concern.
