In this work we present a description of the patrimonialization process of the Piedra Museo. Thisarchaeological site is emblematic for its importance in contributing to the study of the firstsettlement in America. Its interpretation as a heritage asset exceeds its value from the scientificpoint of view and has a complexity that is reflected in the various uses that are made of it in thepast and in the present. On the one hand, the Piedra Museo locality is valued by Santa Cruzresidents as a significant place, chosen as a destination for recreational visits, of importance inthe construction of local and regional identity. On the other hand, we have registered damagesthat blocks with rock art in particular have suffered, resulting in an irrecoverable loss. Theidentification of the appropriations, uses and resignifications that are made of this site, togetherwith the analysis of its state of conservation and current legal protection constitute an initialdiagnosis necessary to establish future actions. Such actions include the development ofinvestigations of a social, communicational and anthropological nature that go beyond themerely archaeological, as well as beginning to design a management plan according tocommunity needs and diversities.
