Resumen:
Nowadays, the global tendencies lead to a wide use of renewable resources and the replacement of petroleum based materials. In this work, a furan resin synthesized from furfural and phenol is proposed as metal coatings. These resins should have similar properties to phenolic resins because they are obtained by the replacement of formaldehyde by furfural. So, it should be possible to obtain a material with an excellent thermal and oxidative resistance but reducing the formaldehyde emissions, which is a dangerous contaminant. In addition, the use of biomass wastes is encouraged, as furfural can be easily obtained from a wide range of agricultural residues containing pentoses. Moreover, the addition of nanoparticles to the furan resin should enhance their performance. In spite the chemical characterization of different furan resins were reported, their use in nanocomposites has not been published yet. Furan nanocomposites were synthesized from phenol and furfural by the in-situ addition of 2% of different montmorillonite clays to the resin. Clays are expected to influence the morphology and the final properties of the furan matrix. The chemical structure of the cured materials was studied by FTIR while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (DRX) techniques were used to evaluate the clay dispersion. These materials were applied as thin coatings on metal substrates and their mechanical performance was analyzed by instrumented nanoindentation and nanoscratch techniques. Elastic modulus, friction coefficient and nanoscratch resistance were evaluated and compared with the performance of a typical phenolic resin. Results validate these materials as a feasible alternative to phenolic resins as metal coatings.
