Previous studies suggested a complex genetic architecture of wing and male genital morphology in phylogenetically basal species of the D. buzzatii cluster. In this work we investigate the effect of experimental hybridization and host plant shifts on male genital and wing morphology in the pair of recently diverged species D. gouveai Tidon-Sklorz and Sene and D. antonietae Tidon-Sklorz and Sene. Both wing and genital morphology in F1 hybrids exhibited an important degree of phenotypic plasticity and could be clearly differentiated from both parental species. However, the patterns of variation among hybrids and parental strains were not homogeneous between organs (genitalia and wing), traits (size and shape) and/or cactus hosts suggesting a complex genetic architecture.
