Resumen:
Settling particles (SPs) and sediments collectedin the Buenos Aires sewer area were analyzed for dioxin likepolychlorinated biphenyls (dlPCBs) and polybrominateddiphenyl ethers (PBDEs) to follow early diagenetic changesduring transport and deposition of organic matter. SP showeda temporal trend of higher total organic carbon (TOC) andfresher dlPCBs and PBDEs signatures during warm-rainymonths related to more efficient washout of residues. TOCnormalizedsediment trap concentrations suggest a diageneticmagnification of dlPCBs during cold-dry months due toenhanced decomposition of TOC, whereas most labilePBDEs appear to follow TOC decay. The diageneticbehavior of individual congeners along seasonal changes(cold/warm) and during deposition (bottom sediment/SP)shows the selective preservation of heavier, more persistentcongeners with a positive relationship with sediment halflives. The 3?4 times diagenetic magnification of heaviercongeners observed in bottom sediments would be a prevailinglong-term pathway for dlPCBs and PBDEs bioaccumulationin detritus feeding organisms.
