Resumen:
The LIBS technique consists in the emission of discreet radiation by electronic excitation of the differentspecies of particular element in a plasma generated by the impact of a laser pulse to a material. Therefore, identifying the characteristic emission lines and their intensities can determine the elemental composition ofthe material. In addition, previous work presented the relationship that exists between the species in ionicand neutral state in the LIBS plasma and the surface characteristics of the material. In this work we studiedthe surface hardness of patterns for low alloy steels and the ratio of the intensities for the characteristicemission lines of iron obtained by the spectra generated by the LIBS technique. A linear and reproduciblerelationship between the Vickers hardness and the ratio of intensities of signals from the species of iron FeIIsignals (first ionization M +1) and FeI (neutral state M0) was found. In addition hardness profiles were made for the characterization of a weld bead in carbon steel, showing the versatility of the LIBS technique as acomplementary tool for the analysis of surface hardness in nuclear materials for future works.
