We report a XAFS characterization of simple electrochemical synthesized small CuN (N ≤ 30) atomic quantum clusters in Tetrabutylammonium nitrate aqueous solution. Clusters prepared this way are photoluminiscent with very large band gaps; they can be solubilized in different solvents and capped with cysteine. Both the type of solvent and variety of capping agents strongly influence the stability of Cu clusters which can evolve to Cu nanoparticles or sulfur-compounds under UV-irradiation. We present here the first studies by XAFS of the stability of Cu atomic quantum clusters showing the effects of solvent, capping and UV-radiation on their stability.
