Resumen:
The genus Melanophryniscus Gallardo, 1961 is composed of 31 species occurring in South America in the interandean valleys of southern Bolivia, southern Brazil, northern Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay (Frost 2023). Melanophryniscus klappenbachi (Prigioni & Langone 2000) is one of the 11 species included in the Melanophryniscus stelzneri group (Deforel et al. 2021, and references therein). This species has been reported in the provinces of Chaco, Formosa, northern Santa Fe and Santiago del Estero in Argentina; in the departments of Alto Paraguay, Ñeembucú, and Presidente Hayes in Paraguay; and possibly in adjacent Bolivia and, Mato Grosso do Sul, in Brazil (Frost 2023).The advertisement calls were recorded in the department of Primero de Mayo, in the province of Chaco (27°6´5.41´´S, 59°2´31.86´´W), Argentina, on 9 April 2022, between 16:10 and 17:20 h. More than five consecutive calls were analyzed in each case (Males: 1=11, 2=12, 3=14, 4=6, and 5=6). Call durations were found in the range from 0.591 to 7.241 s (1.855±2.120) and calls were emitted at intervals of different duration: 0.447 to 12.801 s (2.412± 2.406). The advertisement call was a complex structure with a dominant frequency of 2,239 to 2,583 Hz, and two clearly distinguishable segments (Fig. 1A–D). The first segment lasted 0.192 to 6.854 s (1.569 ± 1.827) and consisted of short and isolated emissions, highly variable in number ranged from 2 to 27 notes (6.979 ± 5.728). The second segment consisted of a trill of variable length lasting between 0.196 and 1.951 s (0.568 ± 0.536); the number of pulses per trill ranged from 13 to 144 (42 ± 41.337) and the rate was between 61.869 and 96.327(71.861 ± 5.372)
