Resumen:
The Potrok Aike lake -the most reliable freshwater source during the last 15,000 years- is located at the Pali Aike Volcanic Field, a region where some of the earliest south american human occupations were recorded. Since the area is extremely dry, this lake was a magnet for human populations. Two field seasons concentrated in the archaeological study of the lake and its immediate catchment were conducted. This research was part of the ?Proyecto Interdisciplinario Potrok Aike? (PIPA). Previous information was limited to that provided by the excavation of the Potrok Aike rockshelter, with a date of 740 + 180 (Gómez Otero 1993).
