Lasing Conditions of Transverse Electromagnetic Modes in Metallic-Coated Micro- and Nanotubes

In thiswork, we study the lasing conditions ofthe transverse electric (TE)modes of micro- and nanotubescoated internally with a thin metalliclayer. This geometry maytackle some of the problems of nanolasers andspasers as itallows the recycling of the active medium whileproviding atunable plasmonic cavity. The system presents two types ofTEmodes: cavity modes (CMs) and whispering-gallery modes(WGMs). Onthe one hand, we show that the lasing of WGMis only possible innanoscale tubes. On the other hand, fortubes of some micrometers ofdiameter, we found that thesystem presents a large number of CMs withlasing frequencieswithin the visible and near-infrared spectrum andvery low gain thresholds. Moreover, the lasing frequencies of CMs canbeaccurately described by a simple one-parameter model.
