MULTIPHASE CHARACTERIZATION OF CU-IN-SN ALLOYS AND COMPARISON WITH CALCULATED PHASE EQUILIBRIA S. Tumminello, N. del Negro, C. Carrascal, S.G. Fries, P. Alonso, S. SommadossiCu-In-Sn is a candidate system to replace traditional Sn-Pb alloyscommonly used in joining process in the electronic industry. Thoroughthermodynamic understanding is required for the selection/design ofadequate and efficient alloys for specific applications. Influence ofhigh cost elements like In on microstructure and phase stability iscrucial for industrial use.We prepared binary and ternary alloys by melting high purity elements(5N) for selected compositions and cooling down to reproduce processconditions (as melted samples). A set of samples was annealed at 500°Cduring 40 days to investigate equilibrium conditions (homogenizedsamples). We inspected the resulting microstructures combiningmetallographic teachniques and optical microscopy. Chemical compositionwas determined using scanning electron microscopy equipped with electronprobe microanalysis. X-ray powder diffraction with synchrotron radiationwas carried out for crystal structure identification. Measurements oftransition temperatures were done by differential scanning calorimetry .We compare our experimental results with phase diagram calculationsusing Liu X. J, et al. 2001 thermodynamic description based in theCALPHAD method, available in literature.
